June 2008 - Thanks to a strong spring showing by the HHS men and womens sports teams, HHS has won the Wachovia Cup for 2008. For most of the season, HHS was trailing private school Bishop McGuinness in the 1-A standings. But a championship in boys outdoor track, a runner-up finish in boys tennis, and a fourth place finish in girls outdoor track gave the Bearcats 525 points versus 467.5 for McGuinness. In the fall, the Lady Bearcats volleyball team contributed valuable points with its third straight 1-A title. The boys basketball team was another major points producer by advancing to the 1-A regionals for the first time in a decade. "We had alot of different teams perform really well this year. It was a total effort on behalf of all the programs," HHS athletic director Todd Murphy said. HHS will receive the cup at NCHSAA Day in Chapel Hill this fall.
